Chicken Soup for the Expecting Parents' Souls

When Ryan doesn't feel good I love to make chicken noodle soup from homemade chicken stock. It's one of my favorite recipes. Unfortunately it takes a while to make, but it is delicious and freezes nicely so I like to make a lot to keep some on hand at all times. Ryan swears by my chicken noodle soup. He thinks that it is the key to his health!

I've found that the best way to make this recipe is after we buy a rotisserie chicken. I'll pick one up on a game day or after work when I really don't feel like cooking and refrigerate the carcass overnight to use in chicken stock the next day. The original recipe, written by Tyler Florence, calls for a whole chicken but I'd rather use the carcass from a left over rotisserie chicken with about two and a half pounds of boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Boiled chicken breasts shred more evenly and they assure white meat in every bite!

Note: The soup in the above picture does not accurately portray the recipe listed. I have doubled the vegetables in the soup recipe (not in the stock recipe) since taking the above picture. Before there was too much corn and not enough carrots and celery, in my opinion.

Week 21

Jonah could not stand that I was not paying attention to him.
He just wanted his nose scratched! Sweet boy ♥

How far along? 21 Weeks
Baby is the size of a... banana. Although, I don't understand how this is possible, considering the baby was the size of a cantaloupe last week. I think TheBump.com may have their fruit sizes confused. Regardless, the baby is about 12.2 oz and 10.5 in
Total weight gain: Nine pounds
Maternity clothes? Still making it work with my normal clothes and a couple of belly bands from Amie.

Stretch marks? None!
Sleep: Sleeping pretty well, except for strange dreams and getting up to pee every morning around 3AM.
Best moment this week: Seeing the baby on Thursday and Ryan feeling him/her kick for the first time. I've really been enjoying feeling "big" kicks, they make me so happy.
Miss Anything? I was homesick all weekend--even if the race fans were in town for the Daytona 500. There is something about the beaches in Ormond and swamp land, aka "the Loop," that I miss so deeply, it's hard to explain.
Movement: Lots of "big" movement and kicks this week. I'm loving every second of it!
Food cravings: Outback Steakhouse, so wanting a huge meal from my favorite chain restaurant...
Anything making you queasy or sick: Still no, 21 weeks and I haven't been sick once!
Gender: Unknown. We went shopping yesterday and I couldn't help but stop and look at the baby girl clothes and say, "I hope we have a girl!" That is, until I got to the boy section and saw some mini swim trunks, then I said, "I hope we have a boy!" Ryan just shook his head and laughed at me.
Labor Signs: None, and the cramping from last week has gone away.
Symptoms: Silly maybe, but I've been feeling wildly unattractive. I'm sure it's just my hormones, which were out of control this weekend...
Belly Button in or out? Looking shallower.
Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy for the most part.
Looking forward to: Seeing my dad, step mom, little sister, Mallory, and best friend, Daniel, this weekend in Orlando for Mallory's dance nationals. I want to bring my chalkboard and do my week 22 progression picture with Mallory's dance team! How cute would that be?

How to Sneak into the Vinoy Resort Pool

The Renaissance Vinoy Resort in the Old Northeast of Saint Petersburg is my dream wedding reception venue. It's history is rich and the ballroom has a Dale Chihuly chandelier, Isla de la Luna, that is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful pieces of artwork I've ever seen.

When Ryan and I moved to St. Pete we were lucky enough to snag a temporary place in the Old Northeast. Unfortunately, buying a home in this neighborhood is out of the question until our incomes significantly increase. But for now, living within walking distance of the Vinoy is good enough for me. The pool is an amenity we enjoy taking advantage of--even if it is reserved for guests only.

After being kicked out of the Vinoy pool area on more than one occasion, I decided to creatively use the manipulative thinking I had picked up from a few overly intelligent, underrated con-artists I knew in Daytona Beach. Below you will find my step-by-step instructions to sneaking into the Vinoy pool. If you follow them carefully I believe you too will find the success Ryan and I have enjoyed!

How to Sneak in to the Vinoy Pool

1. Get a light blue towel (you will need one per person sneaking in). Ryan and I just so happen to have light blue towels in our bathroom so we brought those the first time. However, the Vinoy towels are slightly smaller than regular shower towels and the edges are a light blue, white mixture--very hard to impersonate. I recommend grabbing a couple of abandoned Vinoy towels once you're in. Take them home, wash them and reserve them for sneaking in to the Vinoy so you don't stand out.

2. Travel light. Remember, you're pretending to stay at the resort so all of your stuff should be upstairs in your room. I bring an oversize purse with a magazine, book, sunscreen, and our wallets (also, don't pack too much stuff because you'll need the space on the way out, see #5). Carry your light blue towel over your arm so its easily seen. Do not bring your own cups or bottles! This is a dead give away, you probably don't have a refrigerator, ice maker and solo cups in your room so where did it come from? Spend the money at the bar for a cocktail--hell, you're on vacation, right?

3. When you walk in, there is a schedule of the weekend's events listed on a big screen, Samsung TV. Stop and check out the events. I prefer to find a wedding so I have a last name to attach myself to. If you mimic that choice, pick the easier of the two last names and say it a few times to yourself so you don't make a mistake if you have to say it later. Make sure you know what time the event starts--because why would you be at the pool at 5:30PM if the reception started at 5:00PM? Also, choose to be someone who is important enough not to question without being the bride. For example, the Cousine Brown wedding. Brown is obviously the name I'm going with because I'm not sure how to pronounce the other name ("cousin" or "couseen," save yourself the headache). Since Brown is listed second, that's the groom's name. I'll be the groom's sister-in-law; I'm married to the groom's brother. Therefore, I'm Allison Brown. Oh, and we're newly weds, that's why my license still says Cox. Get it?

4. Walk out to the pool, with your light blue towel over your arm and past the attendants at the gate without making eye contact. Either talk to the person you're with or pretend to be scanning the pool deck for someone you know. Pick seats that are far from the attendants so they don't feel the need to talk to you or offer you anything. If you want a drink find a cocktail waitress. Although they have the similar outfits to the attendants, it's easy to tell the difference because the cocktail waitresses have brown or black aprons around their waist. Do not talk to the attendants!!! Only talk to the cocktail waitresses; these girls accept cash, credit card, or room numbers so they're getting tipped regardless--they don't care where you came from. If you do order from the cocktail waitress tip at least 20%--you're trying to stay on their good side.

Attendants at their post. Avoid them and the post at all costs. I know that water looks good but your cocktail waitress will be happy to bring you a glass.

Cocktail waitress = your new best friend (tip accordingly)

5. Remember when I said not to carry too much stuff because you'd need the space in your oversized purse? When you leave the pool, stuff the light blue towels in your bag. Otherwise, the attendants will try to take them from you. If you don't have that much room, stuff your clothes in your bag and wrap the towel around your body--they won't ask for a towel that is covering your goods.

Enjoy your time at the Vinoy pool! The mojitos are divine, ask to upgrade to top shelf rum for an extra dollar. And if you ever see "Cox Schmitt Wedding" on the schedule, tell them your with Allison--I got your back.

24 Magical Hours

This afternoon I went to the OB for my 20 week ultrasound. If you haven't seen an ultrasound lately let me tell you something, its insane. You're able to see right through the baby's skin! You can see all the bones and even a pretty detailed shot of the brain. No one told me this so I was gushing over the skeleton baby on the monitor and had the sonogram tech cracking up. She measured the two halves of the baby's brain, fluids in front of the frontal lobes, the thickness of the skull, spine, belly, and femurs. She said baby is perfect!

As soon as Ryan and I found out about the baby, we decided that we didn't want to find out the gender. My doctor is excited about this because she said its so rare for young couples to do these days. She also told us that it makes birth that much more exciting. Today the sonogram tech said it's a good thing we don't want to find out the gender because baby is facing my spine so we couldn't tell anyway. She did manage to get a great face shot and we watched him** talk to himself for a few seconds. We even got this great picture of him with his mouth open.

In other super exciting baby news, Ryan has been anxious to feel the baby kick since I started to feel him squirming around. Every night before bed Ryan rests his hands on my belly for several minutes to see if he can feel anything. Last night we were just laying next to each other talking and I felt this huge kick. I grabbed Ryan's hands and put them on my belly and baby kept kicking away! Ryan's face was full of utter amazement. I knew it all became so much more real to him. What a great moment. I'll never forget that. On George Washington's Birthday/National Margarita Day, February 22nd, our first baby made his or her presence known to Daddy.

Also yesterday (oh yea, it actually gets better) my friend, Chelsea, had her twins! Chelsea's boys were full term, healthy and adorable. Mommy and babies are all doing great. Baby A, Skai (pronounced "sky"), was born at 4:28PM and weighed 4lbs 6ozs. Baby B, Silas, was born at 4:30PM and weighed 4lbs 9ozs. What a great 24 hours in the world of babies, I'm totally gushing--it's embarrassing.

**When we use pronouns it seems that we favor "he/him". This is not necessarily because we would prefer a boy, it's simply because that is the universal pronoun--and way better than calling baby "it".

Mardi Gras & Semaine Vingt [Fat Tuesday & Week 20]

Today is the day everyone in NOLA has been anxiously awaiting, Mardi Gras! The day of ultimate gluttony, a day of drinking, sexcapades, beads, breasts, parades, spicy food, sticky sweets, masks, boas, and live music! It’s a magical day for those not expecting...

Thus I am a mommy-to-be so the highlight of my Mardi Gras is a homemade quiche and left over King Cake. I attached the recipe for my quiche; it’s a staple in our house. Almost every weekend I make one using the same base mix. Try it out with different veggies, meats, and cheeses and share your creations! I'm always searching for new combos.

The peak of carnival season is only one of the reasons I find this week so exciting. This is also, and more importantly, my 20th week pregnant. That’s right, I'm halfway through! After I found out about the baby, I started following the Little Baby Garvin blog. The author, Jessica Garvin, is an absolutely beautiful girl who has graciously shared her experience throughout her pregnancy with her daughter, Harper. Jessica has inspired me to embrace this time of my life; she has also documented her pregnancy progression in a unique way that I couldn't help but do my own version! To view Little Baby Garvin's 20 Week entry, click here.

How far along? 20 Weeks
Baby is the size of a... Cantaloupe! About 10.2 oz and 6.5 in
Total weight gain: I think I'm up to six pounds. I have a doctor appointment on Thursday, I'll know for sure then.
Maternity clothes? My sister gave me two belly bands to keep me in my dress slacks for work longer, but thats it.

Stretch marks? Nope!

Sleep: Great! Waking up early in the morning for work is the worst part...

Best moment this week: Delicious homemade King Cake!

Miss Anything? This week, so much. I wish I were celebrating with my family in NOLA. Its not even about the booze, although that would be an added bonus, I just hate to miss out on events like this.

Movement: The baby is wiggling around right now! I wish he/she would never stop ♥

Food cravings: Cajun cuisine!

Anything making you queasy or sick: No, not really.
Gender: Its a surprise!
Ryan and I have decided not to find out the gender of the baby.
Labor Signs: No, but I did have some terrible, long lasting cramps yesterday I was nervous about. They finally went away, I'll be sure to mention them at my appointment this week.

Symptoms: Minor discomfort is all

Belly Button in or out? It’s starting to become shallower... It must be a preview of what’s to come!

Happy or Moody most of the time: Happy and surprisingly calm
Looking forward to: Seeing the baby on Thursday, I haven't seen mini since the twelve-week ultrasound!

Food Fit for Carnival Season

Happy [almost] Mardi Gras!

Rather than spend my weekend in New Orleans watching the various parades (like my favorite, Krewe de Thoth, which ran this afternoon about a block from my uncle's uptown home) and attending crab boils at neighbors' houses, I've had a quiet weekend here in St. Pete. In an attempt to celebrate--regardless of my global positioning--I whipped up a few of my favorite Cajun dishes and sweets.

I know I promised to get these recipes and pictures to you yesterday, I'm sorry for the delay, but after a full day in the hot kitchen Mama was tired! Below is every thing you need, let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Enjoy!

Welcome: Please Don't Mind the Mess

This is my first blog. I fear that I may be off to a rocky start but I promise that I will do my research and get better! I know the keys to a good blog are to post often, welcome interaction, and post pictures. I vow to do all those things, not only for your enjoyment but for my own as well.

Today is a gloomy, rainy day in the south. My mom reports that the gray, damp day that is greeting me here in St. Pete is the same one she is experiencing in New Orleans. This weekend is a terrible one for poor weather in NOLA, as this is carnival weekend--the weekend before Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). My mom, step dad, cousin, and his wife have gone to NOLA to celebrate the season with my uncle, aunt, and other cousin who live there. Unfortunately, being that I am almost 20 weeks pregnant, participating in the drunken debauchery that is this weekend in NOLA would be both irresponsible and dangerous to our beloved mini in my belly. However, despite the 680 approximate miles between my family and me right now, I insist on not missing out on some of the delicious Cajun classic dishes and sweet King Cake. Therefore, I will dedicate this day to cooking and baking--an act you too will benefit from, as I plan to post plenty of pictures and recipes when I am finished.

I hope the weather is better where you are! Talk to you soon.
