Mila's 12 Month Pictures

We haven't done professional pictures with Mila since she was born--and those were half-assed and partly unwanted (I don't mean to sound ungrateful, read the whole story here). Mila's first birthday marked a very special occasion and we really wanted to get it on film, so the Sunday before Mila's first birthday we met with Kate from Katogenic Photography at our house for pictures. We finished off the session by heading to our favorite beach approach, it was the perfect morning for pictures. We are so grateful to have had the chance to work with Kate, we assure you, it won't be the last time. Here are just a few of the fabulous pictures she took:

Fourth of July '12 & '13

Last year, on the Fourth of July, we woke up in the hospital with a daughter who was about 43 hours old and who was still nameless. Shortly after we woke, we were told we would be allowed to leave. It was a beautiful day outside, the perfect Fourth of July. The sun was shining and the Rays were lacing up their cleats just a few blocks away in anticipation for the early afternoon game versus the Yankees.

By hour 46 we had decided on a name that fit our brown-haired beauty perfectly, Mila Joan. After we packed up to leave, they wheeled us to the elevator. I remember sitting in the wheel chair on the elevator, holding Mila strapped in the car seat on my lap thinking, "this is her first elevator ride." Humorously enough, I don't remember being as sentimental in the car--although I did nag Ryan at every turn and red light to drive more cautiously. By the time we pulled out of the hospital parking lot, the baseball game had begun so we basically had the road to ourselves. I was physically exhausted and starving for some non-hospital food. We drove through Wendy's--because who wants to go out to eat 48 hours after giving birth? The girl at the Wendy's drive through complimented us on Mila's festive attire and congratulated us on our new daughter. I wonder how frequently new parents hit the drive through on the way home.

When we arrived at home our house was clean, the refrigerator was stocked, the dog was fed and my mom was waiting patiently to make sure we settled in before she went home. We took a couple of bad terrible pictures before I tucked Mila into her bassinet and I crawled into our bed. I turned on HGTV, ate about a quarter of my salad and passed out. The rest of the day was spent in bed snuggling with my new family. Mila woke up to eat as the beach fireworks starting going off. I remember she jumped the first few times she heard the "Boom!" We got her back to sleep and walked out to the drive way to try to catch a few fireworks before the display ended. We saw a couple over the tree line before I had to go back inside--standing for a long time still wasn't really an option at that point.

Although it was quiet, it was the perfect way to spend our first holiday as a family. I will certainly never forget Fourth of July 2012.

This year was a bit more traditional. Beach, beer, sandy sandwiches and fireworks! The day started off with a festive breakfast...

...festive gear and, of course, a Publix run (it's one of the few holidays they're open, I like to take advantage).

We were at the beach by noon and stayed until the black line of impending rain got too close for our taste.

We packed up camp (which is actually pretty accurate considering we had two tents, multiple coolers, a grill, beer pong table, pack and play, etc., etc., etc.), loaded the car and shut our doors just as the first rain drops hit the windshield. Our timing was epic, to say the least.

We went home to nap through the rain storm. Around 8PM I woke everyone up and we rallied with our friends at the beach to watch the fireworks. Unfortunately, due to the storm, the fireworks display was cancelled last minute on our island. However, the islands north and south still had their displays so Mila got to witness all the glory from a reasonable distance, which worked out well, as I wasn't sure how she would take all the noise. She was actually mesmerized by the noise, lights and flairs, even the close ones the crowd on the beach set off. She didn't jump once and didn't complain when the rain started again. It was the time, if anything, that got on her nerves. When we got to the car she was ready to go to bed.

Next year, since the Fourth will be on a Friday, we're thinking about renting a room for the weekend. It would be so much easier. Mila would be able to sleep when she wanted, we would be able to hang out later, no one would have to drive or ride their bikes (my friends got into a bicycle accident on the way home this year, no major injuries) and maybe we'd be able to prevent sandy sandwiches--because no one really likes that part of the Fourth anyway.

Dear Mila: Happy 1st Birthday

My Sweet Mila Girl,

Today you became a one-year-old. I'm sorry that it's taken me an entire year to write you. I've been trying to be conscious about my time with you. When you're awake I sincerely try to enjoy every second we have together. I love taking you for walks around the neighborhood, reading to you, having tea parties and playing in the backyard with you and Jonah. Yet, even with all the together time we share, I'm flabbergasted with how quickly this year went. I can barely remember the small, soft bundle of love that we brought home from the hospital.

This afternoon I stumbled across some pictures of you around five months. You smiled as you enjoyed tummy time on the Baby Einstein Under the Sea Activity Mat that Aunt Josee gave you. My heart ached for that bald lump of cuddliness. So badly I yearned to go home to you, to hold you and smother you with kisses.

When the clock struck five, I scrambled out of the door and was thrilled when I walked into Miss Emily's house and was greeted with your warm smile. When I got to you, you reached toward me with your free hand, pulled me close and buried your face in my dress, not unlike you do to Jonah's thick fur. Being loved by you is so fulfilling.

You consume my heart with love and make me want to fight for every breath. I never want there to be a time in either of our lives when we have to live without one another. You are my sole reason for living, my absolute everything. I hope that you can understand my love as you grow, but if you take after me--like our friends and family insist--you may not be able to, until you are a mother yourself.

Thank you for teaching me what it is to take things slow and enjoy life. Even tonight when we arrived home I took the time to put comfy clothes on both you and me before going outside to play. What's the point in playing if you're going to be uncomfortable? Who cares if we make a little extra laundry?

Tonight your dad and I shared a beer while we watched you play. Jonah danced around you and you laughed as you tried to catch him and eat leaves at the same time. We decided to head down to the beach approach (103rd and Gulf) so you could eat sand instead, you love to eat sand. You also love challenging the waves--even though they occasionally get the best of you. You're not afraid. No matter how many times you've been knocked over by a wave, you've always gone back.

You're so strong. You're wise, determined and independent. You're what a woman in the 21st century should be like. I admire you. I want to be more like you. Maybe when I grow up I will be. In the mean time, I'll keep doing what I'm doing--which, in most cases, is whatever you want to do.

I vow to be the mother you need me to be. I vow to listen and to be empathetic. I will strive to continue to learn and to never assume that I know it all. I pray you will always know you can come to me, for you are my daughter, my blood and inspiration. In my heart you will never be judged, only loved, for I am your mother and with me you are home.

Happy 1st Birthday Mila Joan, I love you to the edge of the world.
Mom

Babies in the Backyard

After over a year of living with a dust bowl for a backyard, the sod has finally been laid. Unfortunately for my excitement (and my dog's daily schedule), we had to wait a week before we could really play in it. So for the past seven days we've been relying on walks to the park, which is lovely, of course, but we got sod and a swing set so we didn't have to walk to the park every day.

Nevertheless, the week has past and our sod grass is healthy and lush. Ryan is going to set up the swing set, hammock and our other goodies this weekend, but for now Mila, Jonah and I have been taking advantage of every ounce of daylight enjoying our bright green grass.

I'm so glad Ryan and I could provide this kind of backyard for our children, it's exactly what I grew up with and I cannot wait for backyard BBQs and laying out while watching M jump through the sprinklers. I love Florida, I love a good outside space and I love these sweet, sweet babies.

Birthday Planning

Miss Mila Joan has given me an entirely new reason to love summertime, her birthday! I'm so excited about her upcoming birthday party, I can hardly stand it. My online shopping habit has been out of control since I decided on her theme and party colors in April, yes April. Every evening, when I get home, I find myself practically yanking M out of her car seat, running to the mailbox and crossing my fingers for a new package.

I'd like to say "I don't want to spoil anything," but who am I kidding? I have been sharing every last detail with any warm body willing to give me 2 minutes of their time. Would it be shameful if I said one doesn't exactly require a pulse to hear about Mila's party? It would? Okay, then I won't tell you how I've been filling in my new grass on the plans... They say it's good to talk to your plants, right?

Anyway, this all started last year when I won a signed copy of Sweet Designs by Amy Atlas from Fishs Eddy. To win the book, contestants had to comment on Facebook why they wanted it. Everyone had these really emotional stories, of course, I wasn't as poised. Basically I said "I'm pregnant and want to be able to make my son or daughter something more than a boxed cake every year." BAM! I won. Since then, I have read the book cover to cover, tried several of Amy's recipes and have been following her blog. So on April 22nd, when I thought, "maybe I should start thinking about Mila's birthday party." Naturally, I headed over to Amy's blog for inspiration, only to find she had just posted this.

You know that smiley emoticon that has hearts for eyes? Insert a line of those here. That is how I felt about a mermaid themed party with a mint and coral color scheme. Could it have been any more perfect for my little summer-born beach baby? I think not.

So without further adieu, here are a few things you can expect to see at Mila's first birthday party.

The one pictured above is similar to Mila's but hers is mint and coral, of course.

I'm going to stop there. I know that is quite literally a "few" things, but I have to leave some for the actual birthday party post. If you want to check out more of my inspiration for Mila's mermaid party, check out my board on Pinterest dedicated to it!

Convertible Chocolate Cupcakes

Not many things are better than a chocolate cupcake. I came across this chocolate cake recipe in January when I was brainstorming cupcake ideas for my friend Evan's birthday. Although the recipe is a bit more burdensome than others, it is my favorite. In fact, this is the only chocolate cake recipe I have used since discovering it. The best part about a good cake recipe is how versatile it can be. I've tweaked this recipe to be everything from a Malted Milk Cupcake to an Irish Car Bomb Cupcake. All it takes to make these chocolate cupcakes convertible is different fillings and frostings--and maybe a beer, or two.

Malted Milk Cupcakes

Malted Milk Cupcakes: These are the cupcakes I ended up making for Evan's birthday, since Whoppers are her favorite candy. I simply combined my chocolate cake recipe with a malted milk frosting. By using malted milk powder in the frosting, it made it thick, creamy and taste exactly like the center of a Whopper! This frosting is super sweet, so a little bit goes a long way. In fact, next time I think I will make a semi-sweet or milk chocolate frosting for these cupcakes and put the malted milk frosting inside as a filling, it would balance things much better and make the cupcake resemble the candy as well as taste like it!

Reversed Black and Blue Cupcakes: The Moon Under Water, a British tavern in St. Pete that pours the most perfect Guinness, inspired this bad boy. This cupcake is a reversed, cupcake version of the Black and Blue beer. Replacing the cup of water called for in my chocolate cake recipe with a cup of Guinness transformed my traditional chocolate cake into a Guinness chocolate cake. I topped the cake with a Blue Moon Frosting that I got super excited about after drinking a few homemade Black and Blues--can you blame me, they're so delicious! In my excitement, I added a little too much Blue Moon to the frosting, which made it taste amazing but hard to pipe since it was so liquidy. Next time, less beer in the frosting, more in my mug ;)

This picture doesn't do these cupcakes justice. Fact: they are the most amazing
thing you will ever put in your mouth.

Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes (aka Heaven): Ryan loves St. Patrick's Day and everything involved in it. I love cupcakes. This is the love child of our favorite things. Guinness chocolate cake, Jameson Irish Whiskey chocolate ganache filling and Bailey's Irish Cream cream cheese frosting topped with a beer-shaped candy, of course. These are perfect, I need not change one thing about this recipe--except that maybe I should quadruple it because they don't last long around my house.

Cannoli Cupcakes: Don't let the idea of making cannoli cream from scratch scare you, it's totally easy and delicious! Plus, it's made with ricotta cheese so it's healthy, right? This fluffy, not too sweet chocolate cake paired perfectly with the lighter-than-air, mini chocolate chip studded cannoli cream I chose to top it with. To decorate, I bought several premade, unstuffed cannoli shells from Publix, broke them into small pieces and stuck them in the middle of each cupcake. Last minute I thought to drizzle some Jameson Irish Whiskey chocolate ganache over the tops of the cupcakes, since I had some in the fridge (I'm not lying when I say Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes are a staple at my house). The perfect finishing touch was a bit of powdered sugar sifted over top, but this should not be done until you're ready to serve.

Chocolate Raspberry-Filled Cupcakes with Chocolate Moussee Frosting: Just like the name states, this is a chocolate cupcake with a raspberry filling, topped with a homemade chocolate mousse, dipped in a chocolate shell and finished with silver sprinkles. These are the cupcakes that started it all. The OG, or the OC, if you will. These are the first intricate cupcakes I ever made. And although the cake recipe I used made for a bit of a dry cake, my new and improved chocolate cake recipe has given these babies the chance they deserve! But don't be fooled, once you try them, they wont stand a chance at your house. Just like the Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes, I recommend you at least double the recipe, because these are a hit every time.

All of these recipes can be remade using boxed chocolate cake mix. No one will blame you if you choose to make a semi-homemade cupcake. However, it is never acceptable to use store bought frosting. No one can forgive that over-sugary, elasticy, sticky goo that--by some act of science--can sit on a shelf for six months without going bad, even though it's dairy-based. Don't do it, just don't... If you choose to use a boxed chocolate cake mix, I recommend Betty Crocker's Super Moist Dark Chocolate. To make the Guinness chocolate cake using the boxed mix, all you have to do is replace the water called for in the boxed mix with Guinness (just like you would if you were using my from-scratch recipe).

There will be more cupcake posts to come. Especially since I will be making all the desserts, including cupcakes, for Mila's birthday and for my friend Vanessa's wedding. In the mean time, let me know if you have any questions, suggestions or problems.

The New Face of Great Domestication

I told you I was in the middle of giving almost everything in my life a facelift! Did you think I was kidding? I would like to give a huge thanks to Gabbie A., the mastermind behind this redesign. After speaking with almost a dozen web designers and seeing how they interpenetrated my extremely vague ideas, I was frustrated and mentally drained. I really just wanted someone to do something amazing and unexpected, but it didn't happen--until I spoke with Gabbie. When she sent me a link to the test blog, I realized she had done exactly what I wanted without me having to ask (a tremendous feat).

Needless to say, here it is, the new face of Great Domestication. We've shed that old faded pink and jazzed the place up to better match my personality and lifestyle--vibrant, fun and exciting! I hope you guys love it (and Gabbie) as much as I do.
